The Catalan singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat revisits his album “Mediterraneo” in a concert at Beacon Theatre, New York, on February 28. The concert will feature his 10 iconic songs such as “Lucia,” “Aquellas pequeñas cosas,” “Pueblo blanco,” “Barquito de papel,” and the legendary “Mediterraneo,” along with other popular scores from his vast repertoire, along with some new musical surprises.

According to a recent report in El Periodico, the daily newspaper in Barcelona, he could not bear to live far from the Mediterranean and in a poetic way, he went to Chapala, in the state of Jalisco, where he took a boat and stayed in the middle from the lake of the town. “Mexico has been my home, it has been my patio of games, my wedding bed, a life that has a journey that if you took it away from Mexico, it would not be understood,” said Serrat, who is dubbed as the “long-haired dreamer.”

He said in an interview to El Periodico, “Long hair is there, what happens is that it is not one hundred percent and it is distributed heterogeneously, the ability to dream is not intact, but it is valid.”

Describing his world tours, Serrat says: “Since my debut in the world of music to date, I have not stopped writing songs, recording albums, and touring the world in the most varied formats. My goal has been to write new songs, to put on a new show, and go on tour again. I, at least, have not yet discovered a better way to spend my life than by touring and singing for people.”
The artist’s website states that Serrat also succumbed to the temptation of a celluloid career. He starred in three films: “Palabras de amor” (1968), directed by Antonio Ribas; “The long agony of fish out of water” (1969), directed by Paco Rovira Beleta; and “My private teacher” (1972), by Jaime Camino.

Serrat’s lyrical style has been influenced by poets like Mario Benedetti, Antonio Machado, Federico Garcia Lorca, Pablo Neruda, and Leon Felipe. In 2006, Serrat released “Mo,” his first album completely in Catalan in 17 years. The album title refers to the city of Mahon, capital of the Spanish island of Menorca, where he likes to get away from it all during long touring seasons.

The singer-songwriter will be on stage on February 28, 2019, at the Beacon Theatre in New York.
